Cherry was born April 12, 1937 to Loyal & Eula Reid Threet of Corsicana and passed away April 21, 2020 at the age of 83 due to complications following a prolonged illness.

Cherry is survived by her children Linda Layfield of Kerens, Mary & James Ledbetter of Waxahachie, Thom (Bubba) & Terry Layfield of Ovilla, Rick Layfield of Tennessee Colony, Shanna & Ben Potter of Waxahachie, Donny Kindrick of Waxahachie and Bobby Garner of Houston, and her fur baby, Luke.
Cherry (Mamaw) is survived by her grandchildren Dawn & Vincent Assini of Teague, Elicia Gonzales of Carrollton, Kasey and Steven Solis of Waxahachie, Chris & Theo Acker of Midlothian, Jereme Acker of Corsicana, Hannah & Joel Parsons of Ovilla, Rebekah Kennedy of Houston & Jessicah Layfield of Ovilla.
She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Jody Dobbs of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Mike & Candy Walker of Las Vegas, Jeff & Regina Walker of Midland, Scott Walker of Las Vegas, John & Laura Norwood of Corsicana, and Gerry & Stephanie Hollingsworth of Athens.
Cherry was blessed to have 23 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
The family is grateful to Christina Lediaev, her beloved hairdresser, for her many years of service. Special thanks to all her friends who lifted her up in prayer and supported her throughout her life and illness. The family appreciates her church family at Roane Baptist Church and Bristol Hospice. The family also wants to thank Terry Layfield for her loving care and support that she gave Momma through her final years of life.
Cherry was preceded in death by her husband Joey Ray Layfield, daughter Vicki Layfield Alonzo, granddaughter & namesake Cherry (Deana) Crowder, siblings Pauline (MaNinnie) Stuard, Eula Faye Norwood, Frances Walker & Baby Boy Threet, her parents Loyal & Eula Reid Threet, daughter-in-law Gail Layfield, and nephews Glenn Hollingsworth and Tom Walker.
Cherry completed public education a year early and was an Honor Graduate in the class of 1954 Corsicana High School where she was awarded a full academic scholarship. She eloped to marry the love of her life Joey Ray Layfield on May 9, 1954 in Hugo, Oklahoma. She studied Business at Navarro College.
During her early years she worked at Corsicana Cleaners, T.E. Layfield Construction, Collin Street Bakery & Owens Hardware. She later worked in her sister’s store, J & P Drive Inn in Kerens. She and Joey Ray ventured into several businesses including Big Joes’ Spinner Fishing Lures, Mary Ann’s Restaurant, Kerens Game Hall, and small boat sales. Cherry’s career took her to Regal International as a Production Scheduler for 30+ years, and several years at Russell Stover.
Cherry was musically gifted and began playing piano for church at age 11 at Corsicana Missionary Baptist Church. At age 14, she and her sisters sang on the local radio station. She served as pianist at Kerens Missionary Baptist Church for 9 years in the 1950-60s. During the 1980s, she played keyboard and sang in a traveling Christian band for revivals and other events. She was a member of Roane Baptist Church where she served as Pianist from 1982-2017. She taught piano for several years, and she also played French horn, keyboard and organ.
Independent viewing is available at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning, with extended hours on Friday evening until 7 pm. A graveside service at Kerens City Cemetery pavilion will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 25, 2020, with the Reverends Thom Layfield (son), Rick Layfield (son) James Ledbetter (son-in-law), and Russell Reed (pastor) officiating.
Pallbearers are James Ledbetter, Donny Kindrick, Bobby Garner, Chris Acker, Jereme Acker, Scott Walker, Matthew Dixon, and Jagger Dixon. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Layfield, Ben Potter and the Prayer warriors of the Michael Unit.
