Imogene met the love of her life Ben E. Nowell and they married in 1952. Imogene and Ben had two daughters, Janice and Cindy and lived a short time in Garland. In 1961, Imogene and Ben built their home in Corsicana where Imogene set about the loving work of being an excellent cook and homemaker, patient and generous mother, and devoted and caring wife.
Admirably, in the early 1970’s Imogene’s school teaching career began. She first attended Navarro College and then by 1975, she had earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from East Texas State University at Commerce in elementary and early childhood education. Imogene taught kindergarten at Sam Houston Elementary School for 20 years. She loved her career and students.
Imogene was a wonderful neighbor and community member, too, who cared deeply about Corsicana, her hometown. Her loving home was filled with music, the news, and conversation. She cared deeply for all animals, not just her own and made many donations to the local SPCA. She took a keen interest in local and national politics and kept up with all current events. She was actively involved in the local Democratic Women’s Organization.
She was a Christian woman who lived by Bible scripture and epitomized strength in her devotion and faith in daily life. Many turned to her for wisdom and advice. Imogene began and ended her busy day with an inspirational quote or scripture to guide her and assist in making sense of the world.
Imogene was preceded in death by her parents and 7 siblings, her beautiful daughter Janice, and her wonderful husband Ben. Imogene is survived by her daughter Cindy and son-in-law Tom and many nieces and nephews.
