Bick attended Corsicana High School and graduated in 1975 and then became a lifelong Red Raider after attending Texas Tech University. In 1978, he married his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Miller Sherman, and they raised two beautiful daughters, Ashley and Jaclyn. Aside from a two-year period in Cardiff by the Sea, California, Bick called Corsicana his home.
Early in his career, he worked hard to become President of Corsicana Grader and Machine Company, a family business started by his grandfather Charles Byrd and continued by his father Jack Sherman. Upon returning from California, Bick found his calling when he chose to work with abused and neglected children in care of the state at Independence Farm as a Childcare Administrator. The children he loved and fostered proudly gave him the title of “Uncle Bickie” and this fueled his passion.
Outside of family and work, Bick had a passion for the game of golf. Growing up, he was fortunate to have lessons from the legendary golfer Harvey Penick. He was a member of the Corsicana High School golf team, where teammates became life long friends. He was most proud of holding the winning record of Corsicana Country Club’s Tiger Tale Golf Tournament four times with long time golf partner Rick Jamison.
Bick took much pride in his faith in God, his family, and friends, loving them all genuinely. He was a calming influence on many while simultaneously having a hilarious wit.
Often when asked how he was feeling, he would respond “better than yesterday, but not as good as tomorrow” and this was his outlook on life. Bick took his diagnosis with the utmost grace and humility, never once questioning his faith in God’s plan nor complaining when faced with challenges. Bick fought hard to win his battle and now confidently resides in the house of the Lord.
Bick is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Barbara Sherman and father in law Ronnie Miller. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rhonda Sherman, daughters Ashley Sherman of Corsicana and Jaclyn Mayfield and husband Mark of Lubbock, Texas, brother Patrick Sherman and wife Kris of Phoenix, Arizona, and sister Linda Gowan of Duncan, Oklahoma. Bick is known as “GDa” to one grandson, William Hayes Mayfield, who is his namesake and always the light of his life. He is also survived by his mother in law Andra Miller, brother and sister in laws Mike and Dana Miller, Vic and Susan Miller, as well as nieces and nephews Layton Miller, Lauren Miller, Aaron Erwin, Adam Erwin, Carlee Miller, Rachel Oliver, and Anna Elkins.
Pallbearers are Mark Mayfield, Rick Jamison, Gary Harper, Steve London, John Smith, Tom Taylor, and Johnnie Richey. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Miller, Vic Miller, Layton Miller, Aaron Erwin, Adam Erwin, and Hayes Mayfield.
Rhonda, Ashley, and Jaclyn would like to thank Dr. Kent Rogers, Dr. Lance Cowey with the Texas Oncology Group, and the melanoma team at MD Anderson for their unwavering support and care for Bick and the girls.
