Obituary for Douglas "Bud" Coursey

Douglas Ernest Patrick Coursey was born in Refugio, TX, on November 22, 1943. He was known to all as “Bud” since his grandmother dubbed him her “little buddy” at a young age. Bud grew up on a farm outside of Coleman, TX and played every sport available to him. He and Dorinda Woodard were Mr. and Mrs. Coleman High before they were even a couple. It wasn’t until their senior trip that they became sweethearts.
Bud attended The University of Texas for a year before Dorinda transferred from McMurray College to be with him. He did the pole vault for UT, his freshman year, but later stopped to focus on his studies. His love for the Longhorns was unparalleled. He believed that anyone who didn’t attend the University of Texas wished they had. He graduated with a pharmacy degree in 1967, working in El Paso and Ballinger before buying out Henry Bowden and becoming owner of Bowden’s Pharmacy in Corsicana. It was a pharmacy much like the ones he’d admired growing up in Coleman – a place where you could come in, have a cup of coffee, sit and visit or read the paper. After many years of working long days, six days a week, Bud and Steve Brown formed the partnership of Beaton Pharmacy. Bud also consulted for Mel Haven Nursing home for many years, a job he found very rewarding. They ultimately sold the pharmacy to CVS and he retired after doing relief work at Brookshire’s Pharmacy six years later.
Bud spent countless Thursday and Sunday afternoons at the Corsicana Country Club with close friends enjoying golf. In 1989 he managed to score a hole-in-one while playing with son Doug. Other free time was spent reading voraciously, watching every sporting event he could catch on TV and occasionally traveling to watch games in person.
He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and the many long-lasting friendships he’d made in his lifetime.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorinda Kay Coursey; sister Donna Morgan of Coleman; children Doug Coursey, Jr. of Corsicana; Ashley Coursey Bull, Matt Bull, and grandchildren, Vivian, Colin and June Bull of Dallas; and his beloved dog Twinkle.
The family will receive friends and loved ones during a visitation at First United Methodist Church on August 21 from 10:00-11:00 am. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am at the church followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery. In honor of Bud’s love for the Longhorns, the family requests those in attendance wear something burnt orange.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Corsicana.
An online guest book is available at and selecting the Douglas Coursey Obituary.
