Donna Kay Simmons entered this world on September 19, 1946 at Florence Nightingale Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She passed away on April 6, 2017. She was the only child of loving parents who preceded her, Arlon G. and Lavern S. Simmons. Her father, Arlon, served as Navarro County Commissioner for many years. Donna was a “special needs” child of God from birth. She had a joyful heart, sweet spirit and loved people. Donna lived most of her life in Kerens, Mexia, Corsicana, and most recently Glenn Heights, Texas. She attended Kerens Elementary School and spent over 40 years at the Mexia State School. In recent years, after leaving Mexia State School, she was under the supervision of Daybreak Community Services in Corsicana, and Glenn Heights. Through Daybreak, Donna met her angel caregiver, Regina Turner, who has lovingly cared for her the last few years of her life. Regina introduced Donna to many new and fun adventures, which brought great joy to Donna. These adventures included her first plane ride, Disney World, the State Fair of Texas, and the Dallas Arboretum. Donna loved eating out and Cracker Barrel was a favorite. She loved meeting her cousin and legal guardian, Larry Simmons and his wife Becky. Last October, they went to the Texas Freshwater Fishery in Athens so Donna could fish! Donna also loved going to daily rehab workshop to see her friends and wonderful Daybreak caregivers there. Donna formally attended First Baptist Church of Corsicana and Straightway Missionary Baptist Church of Corsicana. Most recently, she attended Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, pastored by Dr. Tony Evans. Donna touched many lives with her sweet spirit and laughter. She will be missed by all of those who knew and loved her. She is now celebrating with her Savior Jesus Christ in heaven.
Surviving close relatives are her uncle and aunt, Arlie and Johnnie Vineyard; cousins, James and Debbie Vineyard, Larry and Becky Simmons, Don and Larkin Simmons, Warren Simmons and numerous other cousins.
